Artist Coaching
What it is
In-person or online sessions center on building a sustainable practice and advancing in the art world. Topics include goal setting, audience development, time management, identifying resources, branding and marketing, and drafting next steps.
How it works
• In an initial meeting relevant topics are broadly discussed and goals established.
• From this initial meeting, next steps are determined together, including the need for additional meetings and other follow-up.
• Meetings do not include critique of artworks and the contents of the meetings remain confidential.
Specialized Services
Collection Development
What it is
Assistance with building an art collection in a residential, commercial, and institutional setting, from a single work to an entire portfolio. Also advise on collecting strategies, negotiating a purchase or sale, working with commercial galleries or acquiring directly from an artist.
How it works
• Working with the client, collection goals are identified and artwork parameters confirmed (for example, subject matter, scale, etc.)
• For acquisitions, potential artworks are presented to the client or sourced mutually with the client.
• For sales, clients are advised of possible sales opportunities.
Curatorial Services
What it is
From designing frames for your artworks, to arranging collections on the walls of existing or new environments, to facilitating visits with artists in their studios, there is a broad range of services available to fit a client’s wants and needs.
How it works
• Work directly with framers, art handlers, art installers, and other professionals to obtain high quality services.
• Design layout of artworks in residential or commercial settings.
• Introduce clients to artists and visit their studios.
Meet Your Consultant
René Paul Barilleaux has been a contemporary art curator for over 40 years, focusing especially on the work of artists outside the mainstream or at mid- and late career. From 2005 until his retirement from a fulltime museum position in 2025, he led the curatorial department at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. Most recently Barilleaux served as the McNay’s Head of Curatorial Affairs. With a background in studio practice, Barilleaux’s curatorial interests lie in incorporating innovative presentation techniques to engage audiences in challenging and unexpected ways, as well as working with artists to realize their vision and sustain a career in the art world. Beginning in the early 1980s, he has organized hundreds of exhibitions and produced numerous publications, several of which have won awards, including an AAMC Award of Excellence in 2020 for Transamerica/n: Gender, Identity, Appearance Today. Barilleaux also has extensive experience working with living artists regardless of career stage—from emerging to those with international reputation. A native of Lafayette, Louisiana, Barilleaux shares his life with his husband, Tim Hedgepeth, and their dog, Lucy.
